I was back at my desk when Snugg and Meg Stevens came inside. I pulled out some invoices to look busy.

“Melody,” Snugg sang out. “Ms. Stevens and I have an appointment this morning. We will be in my office.” He gently guided her away from the ‘Life after Loss’ brochures. “You remember Meg. She owns the Stevens Churchill Horse Farm outside of town.”

“Yes, hello, Ms. Stevens.” I held out my hand, but she pretended not to see it. By the look of her perfectly manicured nails, salon-styled hair and makeup, Louis Vuitton handbag, and matching white silk pantsuit, I’d bet that she doesn’t do any of the day-to-day horse care or farming.

“We’re discussing her profit-loss margin.” Snugg adjusted his tie. “I minored in business and economics, and Meg wants me to share some tips and expertise. A healthy bottom line is important, so no interruptions please, Melody.”

“Sure thing, Mr. Snugg.” I gave my best smile.

“Meg, go relax upstairs in my office,” Snugg said, as he pushed her toward the grand mahogany staircase. “I will be right up.”

Meg Stevens’ manicured fingers pulled on Arthur Snugg’s sleeve. “Oh, Artie, I can’t wait to see the grandfather clock you’ve been talking about. It’s absolutely thrilling that it came from Germany, and you have the builder’s design papers.”

Arthur Snugg proudly announced, “It’s a one-of-a-kind, original. Once the guts are removed, I can be buried in it.”

Meg Stevens said nothing. What do you say after that comment? She strode up the steps calmly as a kaleidoscope of stained glass poured in on her white suit.

“Mr. Snugg.” I tried to get his attention as he stared after her. “Since you are busy, I can handle her intake paperwork.”

“Yes, wonderful, Melody,” Arthur Snugg murmured, his eyes glued on his now-closed office door. He stroked his new goatee and combed his fingers through his graying temples. No doubt about it. He was in love again.

“What’s wonderful, Mr. Snugg?”

“I mean, no. What I meant to say is this is a private police matter.

Nothing about her being here should be disclosed.”

“Got it. And you told the twins?” I looked at the security camera video next to my desk where I could usually see the boys—I mean, Alex and J.J—playing foosball in their office. They were Arthur Snugg’s nephews through marriage.

“I’ll tell them.” He paused and looked out the window. “Somehow, when my ex-wife got an allowance in the decree for her nephews to work here until they turned thirty or passed the mortuary science program, I thought they would give up and go work at a gas station or something.”

“I would like to know who her lawyer was.”

“I think it was your old boss.” Snugg cracked one of his rare smiles.

“So, they are actually taking a class?” I asked, closing the blank document I had opened to input her information.

“Yes. It’s a funeral service management class. Perhaps some of these classes would interest you as well?” He looked at me. “Melody, I lost a lot more than a wife in the divorce.
